Box Junction at Green Lane and William Barefoot Drive

New figures obtained by New Eltham's Conservative councillors have revealed the scale of unfair fines being issued by Greenwich Council's new camera at the notorious Green Lane/William Barefoot Drive junction.

Conservative Councillor Matt Hartley obtained figures revealing the camera issued an incredible 2,882 fines between January and March 2025 - which represented 41% of the total of all fines issues by box junction fines anywhere in the borough.  Raising this at the June Council meeting at the Town Hall, Conservative councillors called for the unfairness of this camera to be investigated specifically given how easy it is to be trapped in the box due to Fiveways traffic flows.

Councillor Matt Hartley said: "We all know it is incredibly easy to get trapped in the Box at the notorious Green Lane/William Barefoot Drive junction, through absolutely no fault of your own.  The fact this camera is the busiest in the whole borough - and the most lucrative for Greenwich Council with fines of up to £160 a time - confirms just how unfair this situation is.

"Far too many residents getting in and out of the Coldharbour Estate and crossing Fiveways are being hit with these punitive fines - and Greenwich Council needs to sort this out.  I will be chasing up the Labour Cabinet Member on the commitment I secured for this camera to be investigated specifically - and in the meantime we need as many signatures as possible on our new petition to help us argue the case."
