Conservative councillors will tonight call on Greenwich Council to bring forward a new Waste Strategy to tackle missed collections, improve street cleanliness and restore resident confidence in one of the Council's most visible and important frontline services.
The motion also calls for a dedicated waste management plan for town centres and shopping parades, annual reporting to Full Council on progress, a review of previous changes to waste collections and a rethink of the Labour administration's proposed garden waste charge
Cllr Charlie Davis, Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group, said:
"For most residents, waste collection is the Council service they interact with more than almost any other. When bins aren't collected and our shopping parades are left looking untidy, it undermines confidence that the Council is getting the basics right.
"This motion is about putting residents first by getting the basics right – improving collections, tackling longstanding problems and creating cleaner, more attractive neighbourhoods. Every resident deserves to live in a borough they can be proud of."
Cllr Pat Greenwell, Conservative Councillor for Eltham Town & Avery Hill, added:
"Clean streets don't happen by accident. They require a clear plan and a commitment to keeping on top of litter and overflowing bins. The Council keeps making the right noises about tackling fly-tipping, but residents and councillors need to see action that matches those words."
