Councillor condemns coach parking fiasco

At Wednesday’s full Council meeting (31st October 2007) Eltham North Councillor Spencer Drury raised the issue of where coaches dropping off sports teams at the new Eltham Centre would park.

Spencer said “This has been a long-running issue in the area and I have raised it with the officers involved in planning the Eltham Centre. I was assured that officers would find an appropriate parking place for the coaches as both Cllr Poston and I were concerned that yet more large vehicles would end up parking on local roads. I had hoped that a solution could be found which would also allow the coaches, which currently use Glenlea Road, to have somewhere else to park, as I know that the coach company has tried to find alternative drop off points on a number of occasions.

Spencer continued “I was genuinely shocked by the answer I received. It appears that the Council have put no thought into where the coaches may park and do not intend to do so for some time. What is the point of a consultation exercise where residents and Councillors raise an issue only for it to be ignored?”

The question asked, and answer received, at Council are shown below:-

MEMBERS’ QUESTIONS

16. Question from Councillor Spencer Drury to Councillor Jagir Sekhon OBE,Cabinet Member for Modernisation

When the Eltham Centre opens, where will coaches which drop off groups or teams to use the sporting facilities (e.g. swimming teams) park whilst their passengers are competing?

Can I thank Councillor Drury for written notice of his question.

There is no specific parking provision for coaches that currently service galas at Eltham pools. The Council recognises that the Eltham Centre may attract additional demand for coach parking and is therefore exploring options for coach parking in the area that minimise the impact on the public highway and to local residents. We are due to review the CPZ zone in 6 months time and an assessment of the impact of coach parking will be made as part of that review.

There is a two coach parking bay outside the entrance to the Centre on Archery Road for alighting and boarding.
