John Hills

Councillor for Coldharbour & New Eltham ward

John was first elected to Greenwich council in 2000, when he won a by-election and has continued to be re-elected in 2002, 2006 and 2010; in total serving his local community for 14 years, and being part of a team of three ward members since 2002.

John’s background is in the building industry as project manager, where he has worked all of his working life, rising to Director of Local Council Contracts prior to retirement.  This wealth of knowledge has enabled John to provide support to residents with repairs and maintenance issues whilst being able to make constructive contribution to the two planning committees he sits on as well as the building and Engineering Joint Works Committee.

John has been married to Pat for over 55 years, they have three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and have a good understanding of the daily challenges raising a family can bring.  John’s hobbies are the Armed Forces and gardening.

John is also a full member of the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association for Greater London, he is a life honorary member of the Greenwich Gurkhas, he also marches in London on Remembrance Day each year as the Drill NCO leading the parade.  John is also the President of RASG Kent and Surrey.

Since his retirement John spends his days in Coldharbour, New Eltham and Mottingham area, dealing with day to day issues for residents and supporting a number of local community groups.  John is currently Chair of Community Association of New Eltham and school governor at Greenacres, Cherry Orchard and Alderwood Primary schools.

John has focused much of his time since retirement working hard to achieve positive outcomes for the older people within the ward.  His involvement with the Healthier Communities and Older Peoples Scrutiny Panel enables him to ensure the opinions of older residents are feed into the panel and hopefully influence decision-making.
