Local Paper Review: 23rd August 2006

New stories in the local papers this week include:


In the Mercury Eltham North Cllr Nigel Fletcher is quoted in a story about Water leak disruption resulting in closures on Eltham Hill.  After last week's stories about Labour Greenwich Cllr Maureen O'Mara's prejudicial interests in a planning decision, she admits in the paper she has made a mistake and should not have taken part in the decision.  In the print edition, Cllr Nigel Fletcher also slams the Council's decision to withold a report into the impact of the proposed super casino at the Millennium Dome.


In the News Shopper more than 600 social services workers at the Council are poised to stage a mass walkout over an escalating dispute about staff safety according to union Unison.  The paper also picks up on a story about local traders being unhappy about a proposed bookmakers on Old Dover Road.  A petition against the application has been presented to Council by Blackheath Westcombe Cllr Geoff Brighty.  And a £25m project to save the Cutty Sark could be at risk if potential sponsors do not sign up in time.
