Conservatives visit Chinese Community School

Cllr Chris Taylor, Greenwich Conservatives' spokesman for the Voluntary Sector was kindly invited along with Cllr Nigel Fletcher to visit the Greenwich Chinese Community School.

The School runs at weekends, and is operated by volunteers who wish to instruct students in Mandarin and Cantonese, both written and spoken. There are over 400 pupils in the school, and all the teachers offer their services free of charge in their own time. Its grant has been reduced by the Council, meaning that the valuable community service offered has to run on a shoe string budget.

After meeting students and teachers Cllr Chris Taylor said, "Greenwich Conservatives welcome the good work that Head Teacher Josephine Chan OBE and her fellow governors are doing at the GCCS. This is a borough wide project used by many hundreds of children, offered at little cost.

"For far too long we have been viewed as a party who is hostile to the voluntary sector, when in fact the opposite is true. I pledge to give my full support to the school, and do everything I can to secure more funding for the children and staff, whether that comes from the Council or other sources".
