Drop off "nightmare" in St Germans Place

Geoff Brighty, Conservative Councillor for Blackheath Westcombe Ward, is consulting residents in St Germans Place about proposals to try to reduce parking and to prevent damage to the Heath.

Geoff said: "Car parking in St Germans Place often causes inconvenience to residents. Additionally parking on the Heath itself causes unsightly and damaging surface erosion. Some of this is related to the school run to Blackheath Preparatory School while some users of the Heath, particularly in summer, also contribute to the problem."

Lewisham Council, which looks after the Heath south of the A2, has received money from the organisers of the OnBlackheath event as a community contribution for improvements to the Heath and this is one of the schemes which has been suggested.

The options under consideration are:

(i) Repair/replace existing wooden posts and continue them along the edge of the Heath for the length of St Germans Place from the Shooters Hill Road end to the junction with Kidbrooke Gardens/South Row

(ii) Create a bund or grassed earth mound similar to those successfully introduced elsewhere on the Heath, for example Circus Field and along a part of Prince Charles Road where wild flowers have been seeded, along the same stretch of St Germans Place. There would be several short gaps or breaks in the bund to allow easy flat entrance to the Heath where required.

Geoff continued: "I want to find out what St Germans Place residents (all residents of the Royal Borough of Greenwich) would prefer. The real problem, unfortunately, is the inconsiderate use of the road related to the school. One resident has described the morning and afternoon periods when parents drop off and pick up in St Germans Place as a 'nightmare'.

"Together with the on-going development of a school travel plan either of these measures might help deter some of this but I am also, again, asking Greenwich Council to look further at introducing stricter parking restrictions or to better enforce those that already exist."
