Local Cafe finally opens after residents back regeneration campaign

A cafe blocked for two years by Greenwich council has finally opened up on an Eltham council estate after more than 750 residents backed their local councillors' campaign to regenerate a parade of empty shops.

Thanks to the success of the Conservative’s ‘Mend the Mound’ campaign and strong pressure on the council to take action, New Eltham couple, Safak and Erdogan Potinci finally opened Café Mound this month serving breakfast and lunch, and providing a much-needed meeting point for residents.

Conservative councillors John Hills, Mandy Brinkhurst and Matt Hartley launched the Mend The Mound campaign to regenerate the shops on the Coldharbour estate a year ago, calling on the council to take action on empty shops, poor lighting and CCTV.  More than 750 residents signed a petition to Greenwich council, which it later emerged had actually been blocking the couple's attempts to open up a cafe in one of the empty premises for two years.

Café owner, Safak Potinci said, “Myself and my husband, Erdogan, are so grateful to our councillors for all their hard work in finally helping us to get this up and running.  I am very pleased to be providing this service especially for the people living on the Coldharbour Estate.   It has been welcomed and supported with great enthusiasm by the community.”

Customer, Ellen Packham who lives at Littlemead  on the  Coldharbour Estate said “Café Mound deserves to be successful as they are providing a very good service, the food is good quality,  reasonably priced and the staff are very friendly.  It is a pleasure to go in there.  It is what was needed on the Estate, definitely.”

CllrJohn Hills(Con, Coldharbour & New Eltham) said: "Mandy, Matt and I are delighted that after a lot of hard work, Coldharbour residents will finally be able to enjoy this new cafe.  After decades of neglect by the council, The Mound is finally beginning to turn a corner thanks to the huge public support for our campaign.  I hope it also illustrates that Conservatives really stand up for their residents and communities and having Conservative representation means things happen.  We wish Cafe Mound every success in the future.”
