Porcupine update: No rubberstamp for LiDL

Coldharbour, Mottingham and New Eltham Conservatives have welcomed Bromley Council’s decision not to rubberstamp LiDL’s proposed demolition of the Porcupine Pub in Mottingham village.

Cllr John Hills, Cllr Mandy Brinkhurst and 2014 candidate Matt Hartley have been supporting Mottingham Residents Association and the Save the Porcupine group in the campaign to save the pub from demolition.  Earlier this month the team wrote to residents in the Royal Borough of Greenwich side of the village urging them to join them in sending in objections to LiDL’s plan to Bromley Council’s planning department.

Cllr John Hills has also attended several meetings organised by campaigners trying to save the pub, including the rally held Tuesday 14 May and covered by BBC London news.

On Thursday Bromley Council confirmed that LiDL will be required to seek prior approval before demolition works can begin – meaning that the Council now has until 24th June to examine whether the proposal is acceptable.  Bromley and Chislehurst MP Bob Neill has welcomed the decision not to rubberstamp LiDL’s approach to the future of the site, which he has branded “incredibly irresponsible.”  Last week Bob secured a Parliamentary debate to highlight the issue in an attempt to bring pressure on LiDL to change course.

Cllr John Hills, Chairman of Coldharbour, Mottingham and New Eltham Conservatives and President of the Greenwich Conservative Federation, said: “Bromley Council are right to demand extra time to consider these plans, which remain extremely concerning to local residents.  The Porcupine is a vital community asset and really is the heart of the village.

“Mandy, Matt and I will continue to support Mottingham Residents Association and the Save the Porcupine campaigners in any way we can to help save the pub.”

This week the team will be writing again to residents in the Royal Borough of Greenwich side of Mottingham village to update them on recent developments.
