Safer streets - More police

We all want to feel safe in our homes and walking the streets of our local communities. It should not be too much to ask for us to be given that peace of mind, and to expect the protection of the law. But from speaking to people in Plumstead and around Shooters' Hill, Nigel Fletcher, Conservative candidate in the Shooters' Hill by-election, knows that many of us do not feel safe.

Burglary and violent crime have both risen significantly in Greenwich over the last year. But it is not just serious crime that matters: graffiti, vandalism and anti-social behaviour all contribute to an atmosphere of neglect which invites crime. Labour have failed to tackle this worrying trend –criminals are going unpunished whilst police stations are closing. We need a more visable police presence on the beat and a zero-tolerance approach to low-level crime.
