Labour spend £3.1 m for 'Olympic Legacy' in Shooters Hill

Greenwich Council has been anxious, even desperate, to have some tangible legacy from its status as an Olympic host Borough.  All well and good but some might find it a strange legacy that requires the recipient to pay for it!   In this case the Council is preparing to stump up £3.1m as a contribution to an Equestrian Centre at 341 Shooters Hill Road.

The amount, still be formally agreed, was revealed in an answer to a question by Blackheath Westcombe Conservative Councillor Geoff Brighty at December's full Council.   The project is already mired in controversy as it is to be built on Metropolitan Open Land.

When the application was considered at the Council's Planning Board Geoff voted against “not because I am against a centre of this type but because I thought it was wrong, on planning grounds, to build on Metropolitan Open Land which is such an important, valued feature of our area."

Greenwich Council were not able to say, when questioned at the December meeting, how many local residents were likely to benefit from the centre despite the use of scarce financial resources being considered.
