Council employs most PR workers

Greenwich Council has finished top in a survey into the number of public relations staff being employed by local authorities.  The survey by magazine PR Week shows the council is way ahead of other unitary and metropolitan authorities in England by employing 47 people in its communications team. The next highest is Haringey Council with 30 staff.

Despite having the highest number of communications personnel, Greenwich had a middling population at 215,000 and received only a fair rating in the Government’s recent Comprehensive Performance Assessment.  Lewisham, with a population of 248,000, employs only 11 PR staff and received a good rating.

Eltham North Councillor Spencer Drury said: “Actions speaks louder than words. Greenwich Council should spend less money on publicising what it’s doing and more time doing it.  In Eltham alone, spending could have been allocated to restoring the lido or regenerating Severndroog Castle.  Across the whole borough it could be spent on improving our schools.

“Instead the council obviously spends its money on press releases, glossy leaflets and spin. This council has mistaken its spending priorities focusing on spin, not substance.”
