Council consults on cycle parking for Eltham High Street

Greenwich Council has decided to consult this week on proposals to install parking for bicycles on Eltham High Street.

Conservative Councillor for Eltham North ward (where the bicycle racks will be sited) Spencer Drury responded to the initial idea by suggesting that he was quite supportive of the idea, but requested that local businesses were carefully consulted to ensure that they supported the proposal and did not think it would damage their business.  Spencer also asked for a site on the opposite side of the road to be considered so that it was not directly in front of the shops, partly to give businesses and shoppers an alternative place so that they could express a preference.

Spencer’s final comments were more generally about improving cycle lanes across the borough to ensure that cycling was encouraged as an activity and safer to undertake.

Spencer said “I would encourage all interested parties to respond to this consultation so that Council officers have a clear idea what is best for businesses in Eltham.  If there are sites which residents think are better for the bike racks, I would urge them to suggest them so that the Councillors have a range of options to choose from.

Those wishing to respond to the proposals should write to Ms L Guzman at Liliana.guzman@greenwich.gov.uk by 25 November 2011.
