Supporting the elderly Irish community

Conservatives in Eltham North were pleased recently to show their support for a local charity working with older people in the Borough.  Irish Community Services runs lunch clubs for the Irish community in Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley, and invited local Councillors to join them for their Christmas lunch at the Progress Hall in Eltham.

Eltham North Councillor Nigel Fletcher joined local pensioners and the charity's volunteers at the event, and had the opportunity to discuss the work they do with their Director, Ellen Stafford.  He also heard their concerns about the prospect of their grant funding from Greenwich Council being cut.

Councillor Fletcher said:

"It was a real pleasure to be invited along to see the great work this charity does for older people locally.  Everyone who attends the lunch club clearly enjoys meeting friends and having a good meal.  It would a great shame if the excellent work they are doing is put at risk by the cuts being proposed to grants.  We all understand the need to cut costs to reduce the deficit, but there are many other areas of wasteful spending that should be tackled before hitting voluntary groups like this, which deliver valuable services for comparatively little cost."
