Southeastern publicity for recent timetable changes promoted them as providing a better service but the picture is a mixed one locally. Off peak those using Maze Hill and Westcombe Park no longer have direct services to Charing Cross while at Blackheath although there are more off peak services, the number of trains in the crucial peak time have been cut. Southeastern say they have been obliged to do this by contractual requirements imposed by the Labour Government. A petition to the Prime Minister has produced no improvement to the service.
Woolwich suffers from high levels of violent crime and an existing Labour Councillor has described their Woolwich ward as the ‘murder capital of Greenwich’. However, not only have the Labour run Council failed to improve our safety but are planning to take even more police off the streets.
It is described as cell block H by local residents, and there is a feeling among the tenants that Labour have given up on them. One lady informed the Abbey Wood Action Team “People are always using drugs on the communal stairs, and the elderly residents feel afraid to leave their flats.” This place has danger written all over it and the sanitation issues are unbearable.
Earlier this month, Charlton Conservatives opposed the extension to Charlton Church Lane post office. The planning committee approved the building of flats on top of the post office and offered the developers, without solicitation, twenty days to complete the building works when they only requested two weeks.
Greenwich Conservatives regret to announce that John Antcliffe has passed away at the age of 48. John represented Blackheath Ward on Greenwich council between 1986-1990. He also stood as the Conservative Party Candidate in the 1987 Greenwich by-election before standing again as Conservative Candidate for Greenwich in the 1987 General Election.
John also had a successful career in business, working in public relations for Rothschilds, Bell Pottinger and Smithfield Communications. He was also President of the Council of the Royal Albert Hall.
Cllr Eileen Glover has been working closely with residents in Hambledown Road and Greenhithe Close regarding Greenwich Council's proposals for housing development in the area.
Councillors Glover and King were successful in getting yellow lines painted on one side of Court Road. Thanks to the perseverance of some local residents part of the accident black spot area near Tarnwood Park/Woodmere is now surfaced with anti-skid material. Despite this the screech of brakes can still be heard along with witness reports of some terrifying near misses including a van being driven recklessly on 2 wheels near Mottingham Station.
Plans to develop the club, situated on Blackheath's Cator Estate, and its playing fields are causing concern among local residents. Conservatives have always supported the retention of the playing fields in Manor Way and Blackheath Park and the protection of their Metropolitan Open Land status. Blackheath Westcombe Conservative Team member Elizabeth Drury said "For property companies these open spaces represent prime development opportunities but are, of course, important as they form part of the character of the area and provide opportunities for recreation and sports."
Labour has stopped participating in the Thames Gateway organisation which worked to improve employment, transport, housing and regeneration of those areas which border the Thames (including Greenwich and Woolwich).
Despite considering it ‘extremely successful’, the Labour run Council thinks our waterfront communities no longer need its support and funds.
Charlton Conservatives recently visited St. Pauls Close, Fairfield Grove, where council tenants are awaiting works to standardise them according to the Decent Homes scheme.
Residents expressed dissatisfaction at the length of time the works have taken to start. James Garry was shown examples of homes which the council has allowed to fall into a shocking state of disrepair.
Charlton Conservative James Garry attended the Woolwich & Thamesmead Planning & Environment Committee to monitor the Committee's decision on the development of Charlton Church Lane post office to accommodate flats above the Post Office. The meeting took place on the 3rd of March 2010.
Poor local transport services continue to hinder Kidbrooke commuters. The 89 bus service is still presenting problems to those wishing to travel to and from Blackheath and the 486 seems to take forever on its journey to North Greenwich, often more than 30 minutes.
With sufficient brown field sites in the borough, the Middle Park and Sutcliffe Conservatives will fight any development on Huntsman's field. Conservative Candidate Dr Arujuna Sivananthan wants to see the site returned to its original use as a playing field for community use.
Local Conservative David Brinson writes: “Since I started campaigning to be a councillor, I have met numerous residents who share many of the same concerns. The state of their streets is probably one of the most talked about issues, with many people citing dog fouling, graffiti and littering as being especially big concerns. They see it as a respect issue with too many people taking no pride at all in their local area.
