Council Tax to Rise above Inflation

Labour is putting up Council Tax by nearly 4% this year, at a time when the inflation rate is just 2.4%. Obviously with the May local elections in mind, Labour’s spin doctors are presenting this as a modest rise. But Greenwich Council taxpayers know that since the last Council elections in 2002, Labour has hiked the Council tax up by a nearly a quarter.

‘At the time of the last Council elections, Labour brought in a lower than usual increase, but they more than made up for that the following year with a large one,’ says Councillor Rhodri Harris, the Conservative Opposition leader. ‘The purpose of this year’s exercise is pure electioneering – it’s a case of Vote Now, Pay Later.’
