Sports field petition lodged with Council

A residents petition calling for the restoration of sporting facilities to a playing field in Kidbrooke has been delivered to Greenwich Council.

Concerns had been raised that despite promises in June 2002 that the sports ground would be used to the fullest extent possible, the Council had left the site to fall into a state of disrepair in order to earmark the area for development.  The Greenwich Property Annual Report to Schools shows plans for a school to be built on the sports ground.

Presenting the petition at last night’s Council meeting, Kidbrooke with Hornfair Cllr Andy Jennings (pictured, right) said, “It is scandalous that the local authority appear to pay lip service to consultation with local people.  I have been told that no decisions have yet been made about the site, yet the Council’s own annual property report show an artist’s impression of a school with elevations to Hervey and Begbie Roads.

“What we need is for the Council to rebuild the changing rooms and restore the ground to become a decent public sporting facility.  At a time when Greenwich hopes to capitalise on being a host borough for the 2012 Olympics, we need to be increasing our sports provisions, not taking them away.

“I have had interest from several local groups and schools who would like to make use of one of the area’s most valuable assets.”
