Labour Don't Trust Local Residents

All three of the Labour Members of Parliament in Greenwich (representing Eltham, Greenwich & Woolwich and Erith & Thamesmead) today showed their lack of trust in the British people by refusing to back a new law paving the way for a referendum on the UK’s relationship with the European Union.

Conservative MP, James Wharton moved his private members bill to put in law the Conservatives commitment to an In/Out referendum following the Prime Ministers renegotiation of the relationship. Despite the British public overwhelmingly supporting this Labour MP’s, including all three of the MP’s in Greenwich, did not turn up for the debate or the vote and have been in the media recently attacking the bill.

Deputy Chairman of Greenwich Conservatives Thomas Turrell said “The Labour MP’s in Greenwich have completely failed the local residents in Greenwich. Why should the public trust Labour when we have clearly seen that Labour do not trust nor respect local resident in Greenwich enough to give them their long overdue vote on our relationship with the EU! Next May the people of Greenwich will not only go the ballot box to elect who runs the local Council but also who represents them in Europe, following Labour and the Liberal Democrats weak decision to hide instead of backing the bill local residents must really ask themselves if they want parties this out of step with public opinion representing them”.

In order to put pressure on the Labour party and Liberal Democrats the Conservatives have been allowing members of the public to co-sponsor the bill online.
