Severndroog Castle Huge Step Closer to Re-Opening!

Maureen Burgess, John Nichols and Gemma Robinson - Your Conservative Candidates for Shooters Hill ward in 2014

The Conservative Team in Shooters Hill have expressed their delight at the announcement from the Severndroog Castle Preservation Trust. The trust has announced that Hilton Abbey Hilton Limited have been contracted to finally complete the restoration work.

On facebook the community page “Severndroog Castle” posted the status “After 11 years hard work the Severndroog Castle Building Preservation Trust welcomes Hilton Abbey ltd as the restoration contractor. Hilton Abbey won the contract after a detailed tendering competition. They are a local firm and experts in heritage restoration. The scaffolding and fences are a welcome sight after many long and frustrating years getting to this stage. Building works are epected to take about six months. The Trust is aiming to open the Castle to the public by Christmas”.

Deputy Leader of Greenwich Conservatives, Cllr Nigel Fletcher who represents neighbouring Eltham North Ward and stood in the Shooters Hill By-election in 2004 was the first to offer his congratulations to the group via facebook. Greenwich Conservatives have played an active role in the campaign to get Severndroog Castle re-opened with Cllr Dermot Poston (Eltham North) being one of the founding member of the Severndroog Castle Preservation Trust.  

2014 Conservative Candidate for Shooters Hill and Deputy Chairman of Shooters Hill Conservatives Gemma Robinson said “It is wonderful news that Severndroog Castle could be re-opened by Christmas! This work is long overdue but the saying better late than never comes to mind. I congratulate Abbey Hilton Ltd on winning the bidding process”.  

Chairman of Shooters Hill Conservatives Maureen Burges, who is also a candidate for the three seat ward in next year’s Borough Council elections stood for Shooters Hill in 2010 and campaigned tirelessly for to get action on the Castle.
