Labour Cabinet Member apologises for weeds across Greenwich

At last night’s meeting of Greenwich Council, in response to a question from Leader of the Conservative Group Cllr Spencer Drury, the Labour Cabinet Member for street cleaning apologised for the state of pavements and roads across the borough.

In answer to questions about street cleaning and weeds from Conservative Councillors Spencer Drury and Matt Clare, the Cabinet Member Cllr Maureen O’Mara admitted that “I share other Members’ concerns about the effectiveness of weed treatment this year.” and went on to apologise for the failings of a new contractor.

Leader of the Conservative Group Cllr Spencer Drury said “Conservative Councillors have been flagging up concerns over the weed growth on pavements and roads across the borough for some months.  Indeed in Eltham South Councillors Clare, Dickinson and Thomas took matters into their own hands and actually cleaned one road themselves.”

“Cllr O’Mara was right to apologise – something which very few of her colleagues choose to do when something as important to residents as preventing weeds goes wrong.  I hope that the Council can now get on top of this problem, but I fear that in many places the situation may not improve until next year.”

“Greenwich has certainly become greener in 2011, but mainly because the pavement and gutters are covered in weeds.”
