Spending chaos in Greenwich HR department

Greenwich Conservatives have labelled wasteful and inefficient Council spending of £1.5m on consultants in the Human Resources department over the last four years.

While employing these extra consultants, Greenwich was spending nearly £700,000 making existing employees redundant.

So far this financial year the Council has spent nearly £200,000 on consultants which if it carries on at this rate will be an expected spend of £400,000 for this year alone.

Between 2008/2009 and 2009/2010, redundancy payments made by the Council rose by 185% and the amount spent on consultants went up by 60%.

Leader of Greenwich Conservatives Cllr Spencer Drury said “What organisation spends a small fortune on making people redundant and then needs to employ yet more consultants to manage a smaller workforce. Instead of making those people redundant, could we not have retrained them to do these obviously essential HR jobs?

I see this as a clear example of the massive waste within Greenwich Council as it appears to be completely inefficient. Given the appalling mess which the economy is in and the cuts the last Labour government left for its successors to implement. HR Consultants are an area where we would make immediate cuts.”
