Greenwich Council rapped over consultant's bills

In Cabinet papers published last week, the District Auditor agreed that payments to a consultant had broken European Union laws.  Sherlock Consultancy is run by Peter Sherlock and has helped the Council manage a range of building projects including the Eltham Centre and Charlton School.

Report back on January's Council Meeting

The January Council meeting felt a lot like the calm before the storm as the proposed Council budget is bought before members in the next month (or so, as the date keeps being shifted).  There were serious items on the agenda and some which were relatively uncontroversial.

Exam results in Greenwich

Over the last few years, Labour’s Greenwich Council has trumpeted great strides forward in terms of education in our schools based on rapidly increasing GCSE results.  However the latest measure published by the new Conservative Minister for Education Michael Gove suggests that this increase is an illusion and educational standards remain very much unchanged.

 

Parking in Eltham and Boris’ improvements to the High Street

At the Highways Committee meeting in December (ironically delayed from the 1st to the 16th due to snow blocked roads) Eltham North Councillor Spencer Drury attended to speak about two items – the review of the controlled parking zones around the Eltham Centre/Station and the upgrading of Eltham High Street which is being funded by Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

Supporting the elderly Irish community

Conservatives in Eltham North were pleased recently to show their support for a local charity working with older people in the Borough.  Irish Community Services runs lunch clubs for the Irish community in Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley, and invited local Councillors to join them for their Christmas lunch at the Progress Hall in Eltham.

A Council Meeting of Agreement?

At December’s full meeting of Greenwich Council (15th December) there was superficially a lot of agreement between the Labour and Conservative Groups about the items on the agenda.  However, in reality this meeting was most probably the calm before the storm as the level of cuts required to deal with the legacy of Gordon Brown’s government starts to hit home.

At Tuesday night’s Cabinet meeting figures revealed that Greenwich Council’s budget was being overspent by £13.48m with another £3.5m in further pressures which could still make the situation worse.
