Spokesman on Foreign Affairs
Charles was first elected MEP for London in 1999. He is Conservative spokesman on Foreign Affairs, and former spokesman on Financial Services from 1999-2001.
He was the Assistant Whip for the Conservatives in the European Parliament from 1999-2001 and Deputy Chief Whip until January 2005. He was Conservative spokesman on Financial Services until 2001.
He is currently a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee where he is the EPP-ED Deputy Coordinator, a substitute member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Human Rights Sub-Committee of the European Parliament and Vice-Chairman of the EP-Ukraine Delegation. He is Founder of the EP friends of India and Rapporteur on the European Neighbourhood Policy.
Charles was Consultant Psychiatrist and Senior Lecturer at University College Hospital and St Luke's Hospital from 1995-99.
